Controller test: do your buttons and sticks really work?

Connect your gamepad and press any button. Every button lights up on the picture when you press it, the sticks move live, and a quick check tells you whether your sticks drift.

Press every button and move both sticks in full circles. Nothing shows up? Press a button once: browsers only reveal a controller after the first press.

How to test your controller

Plug in your controller with a USB cable or pair it over Bluetooth, then press any button. Browsers only show a controller to a website after the first button press, so nothing happens until you do. The picture follows the standard layout that browsers use, with the four face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers, sticks and the direction pad.

Press every button once: each one lights up while held and the counter shows how many you've tested. Move both sticks in full circles. The dots should reach the edge of the circle in every direction, and the numbers should go close to −1.00 and 1.00.

Checking for stick drift

Stick drift means your character or camera moves when you don't touch the stick. Press “Check stick drift”, let go of the controller and wait three seconds. The test measures how far each stick moves away from the centre on its own.

Values under 0.05 are normal. Between 0.05 and 0.10, most games hide it with a dead zone. Above 0.10 the test reports possible drift. Cleaning around the base of the stick sometimes helps; otherwise the stick module needs repair or replacement.

Triggers, vibration and raw values

The two trigger bars show how far you press the triggers, from 0 to 100 %. A trigger that never reaches the end, or jumps, may be worn or dirty. “Test vibration” makes the controller rumble for one second if your browser supports it; Chrome and Edge do for most controllers, while some other browsers don't.

“Raw values” shows every button and axis number exactly as the browser reads it. That helps with controllers that use a non-standard layout, where a button may light up in a different place on the picture.

Questions & answers

My controller isn't detected. What can I do?

Press a button first. If it still doesn't appear, try another USB cable (some only charge), another USB port, or pair it again over Bluetooth. Close other programs that may take over the controller.

Which controllers work?

Most modern gamepads that your computer recognises, including popular console controllers over USB or Bluetooth. Older or unusual models may show a non-standard layout.

Why doesn't vibration work?

Not every browser supports controller vibration. Try Chrome or Edge on a computer. On phones, vibration is usually not available.

Is a little stick movement normal?

Yes. Almost every stick rests slightly off centre, and games ignore small values with a dead zone. Only values that are large enough to move things in games are a problem.

Does it work on a phone?

Often yes, with a Bluetooth controller in Chrome on Android. Support on iPhone depends on the iOS and browser version.
