Mic test: does your microphone work?

Press “Start microphone test”, allow access, and say something: the bar moves when your microphone hears you. Pick another microphone, record 5 seconds and listen to how you really sound.

Your browser will ask for permission: click Allow.

How to test your microphone

Press “Start microphone test” and click Allow when your browser asks. Speak normally: the input level bar and the waveform should move with your voice, and a green message confirms that your microphone works.

Have more than one microphone (laptop, headset, webcam)? Choose it in the Microphone list. Then press “Record 5 seconds” and listen back: that's what other people hear in calls and recordings.

Microphone not working? Check these first

Blocked permission is the most common cause: click the lock or camera icon in the address bar and allow the microphone. Next, check for a mute switch on the headset or cable, the mute key on your laptop and the input volume in your system's sound settings.

Another app (a video call, a game launcher, a recorder) can hold the microphone. Close it and press “Start microphone test” again. On Windows, also check Privacy settings → Microphone; on a Mac, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.

Voice filters: what they do

Browsers clean up your voice for calls with echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic volume. Tick “Turn off voice filters” to hear your raw microphone: useful to judge a new mic, or to find out why your voice sounds robotic in calls.

Open “Technical details” to see the sample rate, the number of channels and which filters are on.

Questions & answers

Is my voice recorded or uploaded?

No. The sound is analysed live on your device. A recording stays in your browser for playback and disappears when you close the page.

Why doesn't the bar move?

Check the permission in the address bar, the mute switch, the selected microphone and the input volume in your system settings.

Why can't I see my microphone's name?

Browsers only show device names after you allow access. Start the test once and the list fills in.

Does the mic test work on phones?

Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. Allow the microphone when asked.

What does dB mean here?

The level relative to the loudest sound your microphone can capture. 0 dB is the maximum; normal speech is often between −30 and −10 dB.
